8th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Stewardship thought for the week

February 26, 2017 – 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon (material wealth).” Matthew 6:24

For many people, God and money run “neck and neck” as their first priority. Making money and spending money becomes the center of their life and they actually become a slave to money.  The solution – become more generous.  Giving money to Church and charity frees us from slavery to money and from making money a “god” before God.

Seminary Collection—We received a nice letter from Father Mason, President of Kenrick-Glennon Seminar thanking us for our donation to the annual Christmas collection and assuring us of the prayers of the seminarians and asking us for our prayers. Remember, these young men are the future of our Church.

Looking for volunteers to participate in a workday for cleanup plus another task to paint exterior trim around the north window and a dormer window on Lafayette.  Proposed date is next Saturday March 4th, beginning at 9:00 AM.  Ideally we need 4 people to support cleanup and 2 dedicated people to be on a lift to perform the painting of the windows near the top of the church.  Painting the windows is dependent on the weather and future dates will most likely be required.  Let Ron Pallman or Phil Lamczyk know of your availability.

A Look Back – The Lasalle Park Redevelopment initiative was an effort begun in the late ‘60s, pursued by a unique team of private firms, and Federal and local government to revitalize a 140-acre tract around St. John. SJN and the Archdiocese of Stl joined this team in the mid ‘70s.

Msgr Prokes and Fr. Pavlik were convinced that many of the seniors who had moved from the area, but still attended services and events at SJN, would move back to the area if suitable senior housing was available. Once the neighborhood was stabilized, families would then be more open to moving back, further stabilizing the parish. A feasibility study was completed in Mar 78 that looked at development of 150 senior housing units, plus courtyard and parking in the area bounded by Carroll, Menard, Lafayette and 12th (Tucker). The study was presented to the Archdiocese, who approved the study in Dec 78.

To implement the approved study, an agreement was signed in Apr 79 by Ralston Purina, the city of Stl, the Archdiocese and Fr. Pavlik. This agreement outlined the responsibilities of each of the parties to acquire certain properties and transfer these properties to the Redevelopment organization, which then would pursue building of the senior housing.

6th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Stewardship thought for the week

February 12, 2017 – 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of  heaven.” Matthew 5:20

The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people.  Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven.  Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven.  Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Last weekend’s collections: Envelopes $1,180.00; loose $384.00; Other $125.00

Total: $1,689.00.

Upcoming Masses:

Friar Ed—Deacon Mike spoke to Friar Ed this week. He’s up and around, walking with crutches. Typical Friar Ed, he’s more concerned with the person who attacked him than he is with his own welfare; a true Franciscan. He’s very grateful for your prayers and good wishes and looking forward to coming back to SJN.

We sent him a “get well” plant from all of us at SJN. If you would like to contribute to said plant, there will be a second collection today.

Welcome Father Anthony Gerber and the Juventutam group celebrating the extraordinary Latin high mass this weekend. This is a very special event in the life of our church. Come back any time.

Saturday, February 25, there will be no 4:30 mass due to Mardi Gras. As usual, cars will not be permitted east of Tucker.

Hospitality Sunday will be this Sunday, February 12. We will be serving cookies and coffee. All are welcome.
